Government wants to control media (media tribunal).We people from around campus, from professors to student and cleaners, and they have different views about how media should be controlled. When its comes democracy they all have same view on what does democracy means to them.

We interviewed cleaners around campus to see how they see democracy and media in South Africa and how our government should control media. Citizens like Ms Nonhlanhla Zungu who is a cleaner in UKZN(Howard college campus sees democracy as being able to do things that we couldn’t do during apartheid, she also see it as being free to express our feeling without discrimination because we protected by constitutional law. Also student like Refilwe Mosia who is law student sees democracy as “equality and farness, being able to express our feeling without a fear of discrimination.

We ask that do political programs improve politics in South Africa or do they make it worse. Refilwe thinks “political programs such as third degree primarily criticize and scrutinize south african politics. Whether they affect the political arena; I think not the status of politics has not change. Ms Toniolo’s view is that “ not having those political programs will be a severe loss for the public because they debate on issues that are entirely sensational and they also debate on political issues ,basically on all issues. She also said they produce contact, invite public to think, prominently they help the public.

When its come to media tribunal, they asked questions like” why do we need media tribunal?”.Ms Zungu sees media tribunal as that “they set boundaries to make sure that the do not cross the line ‘ to make sure that the public is protected. As for Ms toniolo’s view “Government is looking to silence the criticism’ silence voices that disagree with the government, the government should have E.G provides education, houses and so on. To refilwe media simply means the right to freedom of press will be suppressed.

its been a great semester everybody was happy thnks to thembisa for not giving us lot of work. we are looking foward to write are final test(quiz).we leant many very good things.

Yesterday was a terrible day, I had to read 2 reading for INTS102 and prepare for a pols102 test. So I left early at tut to prepare myself for a test. I’m so sorry I couldn’t post a proper post forgive me my pips…..cheese

The ANC branded the print media "a protection racket" yesterday and urged Parliament to investigate the creation of a "media appeals tribunal" that the party says would make reporters more accountable.

In its very first session in 1946, before any human rights declarations or treaties had been adopted, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 59(I) stating "Freedom of information is a fundamental human right and ... the touchstone of all the freedoms to which the United Nations is consecrated."



Freedom of expression is essential in enabling democracy to work and public participation in decision-making. Citizens cannot exercise their right to vote effectively or take part in public decision-making if they do not have free access to information and ideas and are not able to express their views freely. Freedom of expression is thus not only important for individual dignity but also to participation, accountability and democracy. Violations of freedom of expression often go hand in hand with other violations, in particular the right to freedom of association and assembly.
